Blurting Out

Feeling Better

How to Interrupt

I Don’t Want To

Have you ever had a child who refuses to cooperate? This social story addresses the problem with the support from matching posters and Break Cards. Social stories are not just for Autistic children. They are a visual support for any child who lacks a social skill.

Some students are not finished when the teacher calls, “Time’s up.” This little story helps children understand that staying on schedule is a way of being a kind thoughtful friend.

This SOCIAL STORY is a FREE SAMPLE! Download a copy to see how you like it.

Two stories: Joining a group of friends who are engaged in play can be a challenge. Some children just barge in and dominate.  Others shut down and play alone. This can spark problems on the playground. Asking to play and following the lead of friends is a social skill that may not come easy.

Students who blurt out have difficulty seeing the point of view of others. They are proud of knowing the answers. They become frustrated when the teacher calls on someone who gets the answer wrong. This book uses both text and CUSTOM ILLUSTRATIONS to clear up this problem.

This story teaches students a strategy for dealing with bad feelings so they can “feel better all by myself”. It includes 2 posters—Quiet Zone & steps to feeling better.- to hang in your break space. Also includes cards that students may use to request a break., and a Token Board for rewards.

Some students just can't get started on work without teacher support and encouragement. This social story solves this problem cooperatively…both sides give a little. The student completes a couple of tasks, then the teacher supports this effort by giving attention. This is a great start toward independence.

Interrupting is not a problem, it is a skill! This is a social skill that many children lack. They have something to say but they have to interrupt to be heard. Use the story to start your study of this skill and use the supplementary materials guide further instruction and discussion.

Children may not understand the effect unkind words have on others. They may not realize how words can isolate them from their friends. Read this story with your students. Give children copies to take home.

Some students are afraid to make a mistake on their schoolwork. Often they shut down and refuse to work. This social story was written to help these students see there are ways to overcome this.

Kind Words

Mistakes

No Screaming

Screaming is a form of communication. Children who scream when upset are egocentric and seldom think of how their screams impact others. Without effective verbal skills, screaming serves their needs. This Little Book is a story that kids can relate to. It can be a visual reminder for the child to try and talk through their problem. Once the child is calm, try reading him this story.

Smudges

Editing is difficult for students. For some, the smudge marks made by an eraser cannot be tolerated. This social story attempts to turn smudge marks into a valuable sign of effort and learning. The last page of the book reminds the child that erasing is a skill that will improve with practice. The perfectionist child struggles with feelings of anxiety. The fear of a messy paper is real and it is serious for the child. Make messy papers acceptable. Over time, as our students practice editing, we can change our focus to neat papers.

There’s More Than One Way

Personal Space

Two social story books on Personal Space ...Personal Space explains the skill from the point of view of the child who lacks this skill. I Need Personal Space is  from the point of view of the victim. It gives the victim a strategy—what to do when a friend gets too close. The larger format books (included) and the supporting materials make this a great study unit.

Tattling

In this Little Book, a boy tries to be helpful by telling on his friends. He learns this is tattling and that there are times that it is OK to TELL. A second Little Book titled TATTLE QUIZ BOOK supports the story. Print this book in color or black & white and use it like a Little workbook. And there is a BONUS third Little Book called POSITIVE TATTLE DAY where kids are encouraged to tell positive things they saw people doing. Plan Positive Tattle Days throughout the year for a fun review of this skill.

Everyone is different. But some students struggle to accept this fact. They insist that their way is the only right way. They cannot consider the point of view of others. In this social story a little boy learns that “My way is best for me. But it may not be best for others.”
